Long weekends and leave optimisation 2026 — the May cluster + best bridge days

2026 is a good year for long weekends in Norway — especially thanks to the May cluster between 1 and 25 May. 1 May falls on Friday (automatic 3-day weekend), Ascension Day on Thursday 14 May (classic bridge Friday 15 May gives 4 days off), and Pentecost on 24-25 May provides yet another long weekend. With strategic use of 4-6 leave days, you can transform these 25 days into more than two weeks off. The 2026 Easter break is also exceptionally favourable: Maundy Thursday on 2 April + Good Friday + Easter Sunday and Monday = 5 days off in a row. Take 3 days (Mon-Wed before Maundy Thursday) and you get 10 days off. The big disappointment in 2026 is that 17 May falls on a Sunday — no extra weekday off.

Under the Holiday Act (Ferieloven) you have a right to at least 25 working days (4 weeks + 1 day) of leave per year, and from age 60 you are entitled to an extra week. Many collective agreements grant additional days, and government employees and certain private sectors have 5 weeks of leave. Holidays falling on weekends (Saturday/Sunday) unfortunately do not give a compensating day off — they are "lost". In 2026 we have two such losses: 17 May (Sunday) and Boxing Day (Saturday); Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday always fall on a Sunday. The best bridge days in 2026 are Friday 15 May (after Ascension Day, 1 leave day = 4 days off) and Mon-Wed before Maundy Thursday (3 leave days = 10-day Easter holiday). The 2026 Christmas week is also good: take 4 leave days between Boxing Day and 1 January 2027 and you get 11 days off.

Frequently asked questions — long weekends

How many leave days do I have in Norway?
Under the Holiday Act (Ferieloven) you have a right to at least 25 working days (4 weeks + 1 day) of leave per year, or 30 days (5 weeks) if you are 60 or older. Many collective agreements grant 5 weeks of leave even before 60 — especially in central government, municipalities and some sectors. Holidays falling on weekends (Saturday/Sunday) do NOT give a compensating day off. Leave days must be taken within the calendar year (or carried over to the following year by agreement).
What is a "bridge Friday" (inneklemt fredag)?
A "bridge Friday" or "klem-day" is a Friday lying between Ascension Day (Thursday) and the weekend — or a Monday/Tuesday between the weekend and a holiday. The classic bridge Friday is the Friday after Ascension: take that one day off and you get 4 days off. Other common bridge days: Tuesday after Whit Monday (4-day weekend), or Mon-Wed before Maundy Thursday (10-day Easter holiday).
Is 2026 a good year for days off?
Yes, 2026 is a good year. Easter is ideal (Maundy Thursday = Thursday 2 April, gives 5 days off). 1 May on Friday = automatic 3-day weekend. Ascension with bridge Friday = 4 days off. Pentecost weekend = 4 days off. Christmas week is good (Christmas Day on Friday). Biggest disappointment: 17 May on Sunday — LOSS. With 8-10 strategic leave days, you can get over 30 days off in 2026.
Why is 2027 called a loss year?
2027 is called a "loss year" by Norwegian media because three holidays collide unfavourably: 1 May 2027 falls on Saturday (lost — no extra day off); 17 May 2027 (Monday) falls on THE SAME DAY as Whit Monday (also Monday 17 May 2027) — two holidays on one day yield only one day off (collision = loss); both Christmas days 2027 fall on Saturday (loss) and Sunday (loss). Result: 2027 has fewer days off than a "normal" year. The 17 May = Whit Monday collision last occurred in 2010.
What is the best bridge day in 2026?
The single best bridge day in 2026 is Friday 15 May (after Ascension Day on Thursday 14 May) — 1 leave day = 4-day weekend. Other good days: Tuesday 26 May (after Whit Monday) = 4-day weekend; Thursday 30 April (before 1 May on Friday) = 4-day weekend; Mon-Wed before Maundy Thursday (3 leave days = 10-day Easter holiday). Maximum strategy: 8 leave days = 31 days off around the May cluster.
How do I optimise 25 leave days?
An effective strategy for 2026: 3 weeks main holiday in July/August (15 days — summer holiday), 3 days before Maundy Thursday (= 10-day Easter holiday), 1 bridge Friday after Ascension (= 4 days off), 1 bridge Tuesday after Pentecost (= 4-day Pentecost weekend), 4 days during Christmas week (= 11 days from 24 December to 4 January 2027). Total: 24 leave days invested for 44 days off — multiplier 1.8x.
